When you start winning competitions of all kinds you tend to learn a few things about life. We live in a world that can be extremely competitive. Those who thrive on the opposing forces of competition tend to be that way about just about everything in their life from their careers to their kids to their homes. Being able to adequately compete is not just about being a sports enthusiast or knowing how to play chess really well.
Some of us take to competitive situations very well. Others of us are not very competitive by nature and therefore could do well to understand the thought process involved. Excelling in the world (which is remarkably competition oriented) often requires being able to think competitively.
The more self aware you are the more competitive you can be. When you understand your own weaknesses and strengths you learn how to protect or use them. When you can understand your own reactions when it comes to the oppositional world then you can bear your own force more readily.
Some people do better if they have some knowledge base about those they are competing against; other people may become intimidated if they know too much about the people that they in the running with. You can use information to educate yourself or you can use information to intimidate your opponents.
Self motivation is a big part of learning how to be a good opponent. The more you can positively motivate yourself the more drive you'll find. This is different from pressuring yourself, which feels horrible and often cause mistakes. When you single out your best qualities and work on improving your less attractive competitive qualities you tend to fair much better.
Make sure that you are in the best mental and physical condition that you can be in. Regardless of whether it is a physical competition or not, you need to be always on the top of your game. Stay focused and try to be prepared for anything that may come your way. Winning competitions is due largely to a belief in yourself and your ability to be on top of your game. |
