As the owner of a local business, one of the cardinal rules is 'Take care of your customers'. Now your customers aren't always right, in fact, they are quite often totally wrong (which can drive us crazy), but you have to look after their needs, after all, their money pays for your lifestyle.
Sure, some of them need to have the riot act read to them every now and then, but for the most part, your job is to nurture and build relationships with the people who come into your business. You don't really want to go out of your way to upset them, you should deliver useful information, give then any education they need to help them use your products, along with the actual products and services they need and want to buy. Your main goal in a prefect world would be creating customers for life.
The first step in this process is to make sure your customers' first (and hopefully subsequent) buying experience is a good one. Then you move first time customers through your sales process where they buy additional products and services from and through you forever. But you've got to get that first sale right, or you will have little chance of there being a second sale any time soon.
So, how do you create that favorable first experience?
First, you already realize that your first sale to a new customer is going to be the hardest, so make it as easy as possible for them to buy from you, instead of your competition. In many cases, the people you want to attract will be happily buying the exact same products and services from somebody else. Because of this, you'll have to make a compelling, irresistible offer, to get them to change vendors or suppliers.
I'm constantly amazed by the reluctance of some of my consulting clients when I advise them to create what could be considered an irresistible offer to entice first time customers to come to their business. Many of them seem to think that just because they are in business, people will drop their current suppliers and come to them instead. Sorry, in most cases, it just isn't going to happen unless you ethically 'bribe' them to try you instead.
You need to create an irresistible offer to entice people over to your business, and then you need to keep them there by building a relationship with them and using effective marketing strategies, or they'll go to the next business that makes them a great offer.
Once you have taken those new customers from your competitors, your focus should move towards doing everything you can to enrol them into some sort of membership or VIP customer rewards program. Once they are a member, you can send them regular 'Member Only' offers and special promotions to make them feel special and keep them loyal to you. The easiest way to do this is to send your customers to a special website page and offer them something of obvious value to give you their name and email address. Then you can use a semi-automated follow up email marketing system that constantly reminds your customers to come back to shop with you, and keeps you at the top of their minds when they are thinking about buying any of the products or services you offer.
By doing this, you'll see your customer retention increase and your profits soar. |
