Today's fast moving business environment has made the elevator pitch an important technique for B2B companies.
The elevator pitch refers to what you tell a prospective client to grab attention and pull them in when faced with a time limit of, say, 30-60 seconds (the amount of time spent traveling between floors on an elevator). But if you are like most small business marketers, you haven't spent much time developing this pitch for your company.
If you were getting ready to launch a brand new business, or even a new product or service within a business, you would undoubtedly spend a considerable amount of time, effort and money to prepare for the unveiling. You would know all about its features and how it works. But are you ready to stand up in front of a group of potential clients and give a compelling one-minute pitch about your company and what sets your products and services apart?
An elevator pitch will only be truly effective if it has been prepared well. Taking time to ensure that you are able to explain why your business is better than the competition is essential. The following list of ideas will help you develop a great elevator pitch.
1. Be objective. Remember that your elevator pitch is only a minute long; that means you cannot explaining every detail of your company to a client. Be objective and think about what your clients need to hear in order to be enticed by your company and then focus your pitch on that.
2. Slim it down. Beware of marketing cliches and over used phrases. Focus on developing a short yet powerful elevator pitch that explains how your business solves its clients' problems. It will take time to make your message clear and concise, but it's worth it.
3. Call them to action. Think about what you want your listener to do when your elevator pitch is done. Ask for permission to call back, a business card, or an interview.
4. Practice. This is what will really make your elevator pitch effective. Reciting your pitch out loud will help you sound more natural. |
