Mechanics and service technicians who want to get to the next level in their career should consider automotive service manager jobs. Of course, there are several skills that are learned on the job while servicing cars. But there are different skills necessary to be a good manager and a training program can help with this.
There are some qualities that you need to have to be good candidates for this position. You need to be well organized, have leadership abilities, be proficient in math and computers, good at dealing with people and able to multi-task. If you have a tendency towards these skills, a good training program can help you to enhance them.
You learn a lot about servicing automobiles when you are employed as a mechanic. It is the business side of auto servicing that you will learn in a manager training program. In this capacity, you are the liaison between service personnel, parts vendors and customers. For each part you need to play, there are things you need to learn.
Dealing with your customers is of vital importance in this position. Service starts from the moment appointments are taken and orders are written up. There are always customer complaints that you need to solve and this needs to be done as calmly and efficiently as possible. Your solutions also need to be such that they make both customer and company happy.
You will learn about how to motivate the people working for you as well as how to discipline when necessary. Some employees can be difficult and you will need to know how to handle them. These may be the same people that you previously worked alongside, so it can be tricky. A manager has to be able to relate well to those working underneath him, yet command respect as well.
Inventory tracking is a particularly important part of this position. A service manager needs to know when it is time to order more parts. You will learn about inventory tracking and what this means for the day-to-day functioning of your department. If you are having problems with parts, this is another area in which you need to learn how to problem solve.
A service manager program will also include training in accounting. If you are working for a large dealership, there will be a separate accounting department. However, you still need to understand how the accounting works within the service department and how that affects the rest of the company.
Marketing is also an area that will be covered, even though larger businesses will have separate marketing staff. However, the sales department has a huge effect on the marketing effort that you need to understand. For example, if the service department has a poor reputation, it is going to be hard to market it. |
