Over fifty percent of America's population now shares the task of trying to lose weight. Though this is an admirable goal, there are too many who are simply looking for shortcuts instead of looking to make healthy life changes. Using laxatives to lose weight is a shortcut that has been heavily abused. Unfortunately, the reasoning behind this method is completely faulty.
That's because laxatives do nothing to reduce the food, and therefore calories, you consume. What they do is stimulate the bowels, often resulting in painful cramps and having to go to the bathroom a lot more often. Waste material often comes out very quickly as a result of these cramps. Regrettably, most of this fecal matter is comprised of water. It might seem like someone has lost two or three pounds using laxatives, but as soon as they quit taking them, they put back on the weight as soon as they're hydrated again.
And using laxatives too often can lead to a variety of serious health ailments. One might not be able to have a regular bowel movement without the help of a laxative. The rectum is forcing out waste, it can often suffer skin tearing, which causes bleeding and the risk of infection that is caused by waste coming in contact with the open tears around the rectal area. And the resulting dehydration can wreak havoc on your immune system, leaving you sick and weak.
Numerous people have claimed that taking laxatives will expedite weight loss and make maintaining a low body weight possible. These people are either misinformed or outright liars. In reality, using laxatives to lose weight is a type of eating disorder not all that different than bulimia. Most people think that bulimics ingest huge amounts of food and vomit to lose weight, however, using laxatives to shed weight is also considered purging and a sign of an eating disorder.
Using a laxative for a prolonged time also can cause nausea and induce vomiting; your whole system will be unbalanced. Sadly, medical intervention will probably be necessary to wean a person off of laxatives once they start abusing them in this fashion.
There are those people who may say that using laxatives is a fast way to lose weight. But what these people are really doing is spreading dangerous falsehoods and half-truths; the use of laxatives or other medications as a means to lose weight is ultimately detrimental to your health. |
