Mini sites got their name because the majority of them are only one page, as opposed to some websites that have more pages than an unabridged
dictionary. However, there is another "mini" feature about
them: their focus.
An effective mini site targets a group of people that
shares a very specific need, or a "niche." This is oftentimes an
important asset to a mini site's success.
When deciding upon a good niche topic, choose one
that's too broad, and it will be so saturated that
you can't break in. Choose one that's too narrow,
and there won't be enough demand to make a profit.
Here's an example. Let's say you want to market a
cookbook. A general cookbook might appeal to
lots of people, but there are countless already on the market.
So you decide to get really specific and write a cookbook of
Mexican casserole recipes that contain chili
peppers.
No doubt some people would like such recipes, but
they would probably want a book that covered a
little more ground. Mexican casserole recipes might be a
happy medium.
When selecting a topic for your mini site, there's no need to rely
upon guesswork. There are free online tools to help you, such as the
Google Adwords keyword tool.
It will tell you the search volume of any keyword,
and it will give you a general idea of the amount of
competition among advertisers for that keyword. The
higher the search volume, and the lower the
competition, the more profitable the keyword.
Take the time to choose good topics for your mini sites now, and
you will maximize your profits later.
