Like every other professional skill, learning the skills required of a sales copywriter take time and practice to master.  You'll have to be dedicated to putting in the extensive practice that is essential to becoming a skilled copywriter - but the work you put into learning will be more than worth it once you're able to make a living with a career you actually enjoy.

The first thing to do as you get started is to read every book on sales copywriting you can find. Start with resources on writing styles and if you're at all shaky with grammar and English usage, brush up on these basics. You're not going to get far as a copywriter if your work looks as if it was written by someone who doesn't know the language. As for writing styles, the AP Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style are good places to start.

Keep up with the fields of advertising and marketing by watching the media carefully. Look at advertising with a critical eye for what sort of copy is effective as well as copy which falls flat. However, there are plenty of successful sales copywriters out there who have only an associate's degree or no college degree at all.

The thing that prospective employers really care about is your experience - but how can you gain experience when no firm will hire you without it? The best way is to do an internship at an ad agency, which allows you to start building a portfolio as you get some valuable agency experience.

Like in many other fields, your portfolio is your first impression. As an intern, you won't get paid to do any sales copywriting, but you will have the chance to start building your book. Interns that make a great portfolio and showcase their creativity are first in line for a permanent position at the agency when one opens up.

An exceptional portfolio will spark the interest of any experienced sales agency. So, once you have it ready, start knocking on some doors. If you plan to work as a sales copywriter, you have to be a great salesperson. And the first service you have to know how to sell is your own
