There's nothing fantastic about bedbugs. They're small. They're ugly. They suck your blood. We thought we got rid of these pests with DDT 50 years ago - now they're back and here to bite.
Since 2000, the number of bedbug infestations is increasing dramatically, notably in inner cities. With all the schools, hotels and apartment buildings, the Big Apple is a breeding ground for bedbugs. Some bedbug invasions are so severe that tenants must evacuate their building.
The spread of bedbugs has to do with globalization. If you're on a trip, and stay in a place with a bedbug infestation, these insect can latch on and follow you home. Unfortunately, even the cleanest home could get bedbugs. Being dirty has nothing to do with bedbug infestations. If a bedbug hooks onto your clothes, or hops in your suitcase, you can unknowingly bring home a new pet worse than a gremlin when it eats after midnight.
Finding a bedbug infestation:
Bedbug bites are the first sign you have a problem. Look for little red dots that itch and burn. You should run the rash under warm water or hot washcloth to reduce the itchy/burning sensation.
Bedbugs don't live inside mattresses, they nest on mattress seams. Look for little black spots that look like pepper on your sheets. These specks of dried blood are the first sign that bedbugs are digesting their meals on your bed.
Ending an infestation in your house:
Call a professional. Bedbugs can spread throughout your house and down the neighborhood in a hurry. Don't leave even one of these pests behind. Make sure the exterminator has proper credentials and experience to handle bedbugs.
You don't have to throw out your furniture. Moving infested furniture is a bad idea because you're spreading bedbugs throughout the house. Use a steam cleaner to kill bugs and eggs living underneath the upholstery.
Avoid sleeping in different parts of the house. Just as a Tyrannosaurus Rex's vision is based on movement, a bedbug's vision is based on heat. When you change rooms, they will hunt you, dropping their eggs everywhere.
Changing your sheets and bedding will eliminate some bedbugs, but they all don't live on your mattress. Many hotels report large infestations in untouched areas, such as behind headboards or picture frames. Experts say to cover bed stand legs and table legs with petroleum jelly to stop bedbugs from crawling up them.
Be a good neighbor, and tell anyone living around you that you have bedbugs. Infestations spread like wildfire. Let those who live around you know about the problem and you'll save them money and time battling those tenacious bugs. |
