Defining The Word "Stranger" For Kids.

One important topic that we want the parents and kids to be familiar with in the Addison, Carrollton and Farmers Branch community is knowing the meaning of strangers.With the goal of keeping kids safe Child care givers should teach kids the importance of understanding what strangers are.
What is the meaning of a stranger? Is a stranger a friend of the family?
Strangers are people who we don't know. It is harder to teach younger kids about strangers. Kids that are under 9 may not fully understand the meaning of strangers they sometimes have this description of a stranger as being a mean looking person. It is very important to stress to kids that strangers are people that they don't know.
By knowing what a stranger is you can exclude family members and close friends but some friendly people like the UPS guy/lady or milk man guy are included. Some kids may think that strangers are only strange acting or looking people. Strangers are people whom we don't know well enough to talk to.
Strangers versus Safe Adults
How would a child know the difference between a stranger and good adult? Children may at times be fooled by the kindness of a stranger.
Teachers need to educate their students very specifically. For instance, when they are on a field trip they need to tell them specifically who is a safe adult and who is not. For example, it's okay to talk to the bus driver and answer his questions, but not necessarily an adult who comes up to you out of nowhere. Some adults may ask kids questions and tend not to be harmful but just to be safe kids should not talk to strangers without their parents or responsible adult around them. |
