Any sympathy for Dustin Johnson over his transgression of a local rule in the closing hole of the US PGA?

Must admit it didn't occur to me at the time that he might have been in an 'official bunker' - even when he was playing the shot people were sitting on the edge of it with their feet and their belongings in the sand. Hardly a hazard to which the Rules of golf apply.
In future, maybe the rule-makers will deem these kind of trampled, sandy areas bunkers 'only within the ropes.'

I do feel sympathy for him as there must be a lot going on in your head in that position and it clearly never even occured to him (as he said, "I know the rules of golf..."). Another case where the caddy might have stepped in to help?
That said, rules is rules, and he took it like a man.
Well done to the RO who stopped him signing his card - missing out on what is still a fair chunk of money and all those RC points would have been too harsh a punishment for a momentary aberration which conferred no real advantage.
